Welcome to the Buller Lab!

PROTEIN ENGINEERING AND BIOCATALYSIS

The central theme of research in the Buller lab is understanding how to engineer new biocatalytic reactions. Enzymes offer a green, sustainable route to performing difficult synthetic transformations. However, engineering new transformations is still a major challenge. Our approach is to combine the raw power of protein directed evolution with insights gleaned from decades of detailed mechanistic and bioinformatic studies. Our long-term goals are to use these new catalysts to shortcut traditional synthetic routes to building bioactive compounds, to probe biological systems, and to synthesize complex biomolecules using non-natural building blocks.
